O'Grady lived in the city of Wheaton, Illinois and graduated from Wheaton North High School in 1981. She is the child of Jan O'Grady (a finance planner) and Jim O'Grady. Her family lived in Wheaton and attended Wheaton North School. She graduated in 1981. Before shifting into Los Angeles, she appeared in several commercials. O'Grady's career began as an actress in commercials and models in Montgomery Ward. She appeared in 1988's romantic comedy, She's Having a Baby and was later a regular character in ABC drama China Beach, opposite Dana Delany. Other guest appearances include programs for TV in independent film, as well as many other shows. Donna Abandando, her first important role on the ABC detective comedy NYPD Blue was her character. O'Grady was the tall-haired team secretary of ABC's NYPD Blue between 1993 through 1996. Each year, she was awarded Emmy Award nods for Outstanding actor in a Drama Series.
